The cold war the Lodestar thought it had ended is erupting on every front at once — too cleanly, too well-timed, all of it dragging the theatre toward one contested region. To stay ahead, Captain Daniel Cross takes up a tool that works: escalating lane-control authority, a hand on every road in the theatre. Each use saves lives and grows a debt he can't read the bottom of — and four rival powers keep closing on the same patch of dark, each for its own reason. He has days to hold the line, and the only thing more dangerous than losing is the price of winning.
The Reach is the action-adventure thread of the Fracture Cosmology — a five-book frontier fleet saga. The Doorstep is Book 4, the turn of the series. Best read after The Reach, Book 1 (The Wrong Number); it rewards the earlier books but stands on its own. The cosmology has many doors and no required reading order; other good first books are The Signal, Cohort, and Wide Sky.
