Readers, when do you give up on a series?

Authors get told to write in series because readers like them. But I suspect readers also drop series all the time, and nobody tells the author why. So, readers: when do you give up? Is it a number? Does book six feel like a chore no matter how good it is? Is it the wait between books? A cliffhanger you resented? The main couple getting together and then nothing left to root for? And do you wait until a series is finished before starting it? I know a few people who won't touch anything with "Boo...

So, readers: when do you give up?

Is it a number? Does book six feel like a chore no matter how good it is? Is it the wait between books? A cliffhanger you resented? The main couple getting together and then nothing left to root for?

And do you wait until a series is finished before starting it? I know a few people who won't touch anything with "Book 1" on the cover until the last one is out, and I can't really argue with them.
