Spotify is adding ElevenLabs AI narration to Spotify for Authors

Announced at Spotify's investor day on 21 May: AI narration through ElevenLabs is coming to Spotify for Authors. It's due as an invite-only beta in June, English only and in select markets.

Some context for anyone not following audio closely. Spotify started accepting audiobooks narrated with ElevenLabs' AI voices in February 2025 (as reported by TechCrunch at the time), but authors had to make them elsewhere and upload them. When Findaway Voices closed on 1 August last year, Spotify for Authors became the direct route. Amazon's own AI narration, Virtual Voice, has been an invite-only, US-only beta since late 2023. So both of the big players will soon have a built-in AI option, and both are keeping it behind an invitation.
AI narration makes audio possible for books that were never going to earn back a human narrator. That's a real benefit. It also makes it very easy to fill a catalogue with flat, samey listens, and listeners notice. I'd guess the invite-only approach on both sides is about exactly that worry.
If an invitation turns up, listen to a full chapter of the output yourself, on headphones, before publishing anything. Then get someone who listens to a lot of audiobooks to do the same. If either of you wants to switch it off, so will your listeners.
