Anthropic settlement gets final approval, about $3,000 per work

The court granted final approval to the Anthropic copyright settlement on 20 July. The Authors Guild puts it at roughly $3,000 per work before fees.

For anyone who lost track: the claims deadline was 30 March, and in April the Authors Guild reported that 91% of eligible works had been claimed. So most eligible authors are already in the system.
If you filed a claim, there's nothing to do right now except watch for official emails and keep your contact details current. I haven't seen a firm payment date yet. When there is one, it'll come from the settlement administrator, not from a stranger on social media.
Which brings me to the part that actually worries me. Last November Writer Beware warned about speculators pushing authors to opt out of the settlement. Now there's real money attached, expect more of that sort of thing: people offering to "help" with your claim for a fee, offering to buy your claim, or warning you that your payment is "at risk" unless you act. Ignore all of it. The official process doesn't need a middleman.
My view, for what it's worth: $3,000 a book won't change anyone's life, but the fact that an AI company agreed to pay authors at all matters more than the amount.
