At a deep-field listening array in the Norwegian Arctic, in the winter of 2047, astronomer Maren Solberg hears something in the noise that should not be there — a signal with structure, arriving on a schedule, out of a direction with nothing behind it. Getting the instruments to agree is the easy part. What it means, who to tell, and what it will cost her to be the one who is right are not.
Book One of The Silence — the patient, precise story of where the whole Fracture Cosmology begins: one careful scientist, an impossible reading, and the slow institutional weather of trying to understand a thing the world is not ready to hear.
