What you'll find here
Fantasy is a wide shelf. The books listed here tend to fall into a few families:
- Epic and high fantasy. Invented worlds, big casts, wars and prophecies. Often long, often a series. Look for the chosen one and quest tropes.
- Cosy fantasy. Low stakes, warm communities, found families running bakeries and bookshops. Tagged cosy and found family.
- Romantic fantasy (romantasy). The love story matters as much as the magic. Enemies to lovers and slow burn are the usual shapes. Bervet doesn't list explicit books; each one shows its spice level.
- Dark fantasy and grimdark. Hard choices, morally grey characters, magic that costs something. Check the content notes.
- Portal fantasy. Someone from our world falls into another. Tagged portal to another world.
- Academy fantasy. Magic schools, rivals, exams that can kill you. Tagged magic school or academy and, at the gloomier end, dark academia.
Magic in the modern world has its own shelf: paranormal and urban fantasy. Stories built on levels and systems are under LitRPG and progression fantasy.
Finding your next one
- Read chapter 1 first. Fantasy asks you to learn a world. The first chapter tells you quickly whether this one is for you, and it's free on every book that has it.
- Filter by trope and spice. Under More filters on the books page you can narrow by trope, set a spice limit, and leave out content you'd rather not read.
- Try "Most finished". It ranks books by how many readers finish the free first chapter. Nobody can pay to be there.
- Read before release. Fantasy authors give out free advance copies here. Ask for a place, read it in your browser, and tell the author what you thought.
Writing fantasy?
List your book free, add your first chapter, and tick the tropes that fit, so readers browsing by trope find it. If a series is part of it, give each book its series name and number, and the books get a page together in reading order.
