The Long Charter

Book 1 of The Outer Run

by R. S. Breed · Founding author

+ Follow Hear when they have something new.

A First Navigator. A six-month contract. A junction the network does not have a name for.

Bjørg Sandberg has spent ten years in the First Navigator’s chair of the NV Karl Vidar Pedersen. The ship is older than most of the routes she runs. The crew has been together long enough to know each other’s silences, habits, tolerances, and weather.

In September 2151, Seam Navigation Group’s Tromsø Office issues a standard commercial-survey contract: four named junctions, three customers, one working vessel, and the usual navigator-discretion clause for the edge cases every route pretends it will not need.

For Bjørg, the paperwork is routine. The run is not.

Across six months on the outer network, the Pedersen does what she was built to do: resupply, survey, calibrate, traverse, report. Then a fringe-clearance stop returns a reading no one aboard can responsibly ignore. The contract has one answer. The route has another.

The Long Charter is the first novel of The Outer Run, a commercial-frontier science fiction series set in the Fracture Cosmology. A complete standalone novel about competence, crew, institutional pressure, and the cost of filing the truth of what you see.
