A distress call breaks the route home.

Captain Marcus Cole has been in the chair for nearly thirty years. The ISV Resolute II is carrying him home from his last deployment, with the officer who will replace him already aboard and one quiet plan left: hand the ship on, step out of the chair, and see Earth again.

Then another ISCA vessel calls from the deep junctions.

What is attacking her does not hail, does not negotiate, and does not behave like anything in the archive. The translator finds no voice to parse. The science officer has no category for what she is seeing. The geometry itself is failing around the target.

Cole takes the Resolute II off her route and into a crisis that will not let go. Across three weeks of running engagements, his crew is pushed past the limits the institution drew for them: an engineer who knows every drift in the arrays by feel, navigators who work the board as one hand, a medical team preparing for casualties before the first order is given, and an XO already carrying the future of the chair.

When running stops being an option, Cole takes his ship to the one place where the crew knows the terrain and makes his stand.

And in the worst hour of his last command, at the far edge of the map, the Resolute II makes contact with something that has been listening for a very long time.

First Contact is Book 5 of The Long Watch, the Fracture Cosmology's starship adventure series. It is a complete standalone science-fiction novel about command, succession, crew, and the cost of carrying the watch to the end.

Reading note: You can start here. Earlier books add history, emotional weight, and the full shape of Marcus Cole's career, but this novel tells a complete deployment story. If you prefer to avoid knowing where the crew ends up, start with Shakedown. If you do not mind reading a universe out of order, First Contact works as its own entry point.

For readers who want the ship, the people who run her, and the final command of a captain who has earned the chair one decision at a time.
