Captain Marcus Cole takes the Resolute II to the deep frontier on her first deployment. Three years after losing the original Resolute and bringing the survivors home, he is back in the chair with a rebuilt crew, a new hull, and one final command cycle between him and retirement.

At Junction 44-F, the ship finds the ruins of a dead world. The science is impossible: a containment field still active after eighty thousand years, a cache stamped sixty years in the future, and a message that authenticates as if it came from the Resolute II herself.
