Inside the Window

Kestrel knows what is waiting at the far end. Getting there is the adventure. A trail left by heavy machinery leads beyond the recorded reach to a partly built works operating on a schedule of its own. But machinery that large did not simply appear in the dark. It took water somewhere. Changed hands somewhere. Crossed somebody's lane. Hired somebody's crews.

So Kestrel follows the road backwards. Across ice runs, orbital yards, inhabited frontier worlds and a marked lane through the wreckage of a shattered moon, every leg reveals another piece of civilisation the official map reduced to a line.

There are calls to answer along the way. People to pull out. Jobs that go right. Hazards that do not. And ahead of all of them, the clock is closing. They know where they are going.
