Bright Horizon
Book 4 of The Drift · the whole series, in order
A welfare mission. A colony with twelve years of practiced silence. A Second Navigator with a decision the mission brief does not authorize.
In 2155, the survey vessel Erika Magnusdóttir arrives at Colonial World 3 for a routine welfare assessment of the 285 survivors of a 2143 accidental traversal. The colony's cooperation has been consistent across nine previous ISNA visits: professional, complete, minimal.
Second Navigator Idris Fasola has spent seventeen years inside the institution. He has learned to read what colonies do not say. The CW3 colonists have been quiet about something for seven years. The mission brief says collect the data. The mission brief does not say what to do when the data is the thing the colony has been quietly protecting and a commercial operator has been waiting that long to harvest it.
Ninety days at CW3. A clock the brief defines and a decision the brief does not authorize.
Bright Horizon is the fourth novel of The Drift. A slow-burn first-contact procedural about institutions, restraint, and the officer inside the system who has to decide which part of the system speaks first.
Standalone. No prior reading required.
Hard SF readers will find a binary-star colony, anomalous instrument readings, and a contact discovered through careful measurement - Not first sight.
