Running Dark
Book 3 of The Drift · the whole series, in order
Officer Dáithí Mac Diarmada has been in the navigation programme for nine years. He has not been wrong about anything that mattered. The dead civilization's structures are artificial. He calculated this before anyone else on the crew. His precision is intact.
The institutional instruction is to classify the site as geological. The crew complies. Dáithí enters artifact coordinates into drift calculations for three months. On Day 91, he begins encoding them as navigation anomalies - technically accurate data in a real instrument record, permanently archived, impossible to erase.
He does not tell anyone. Officer Luo Jia discovers it three days after he finishes. She reads it correctly within twenty minutes: artifact coordinates, thermodynamic depletion data, all embedded as drift calibration. She does not surface it to command. This is not a failure to choose. This is a choice.
Running Dark is the third book of The Drift. The story of what happens when institutional compliance accumulates past the threshold where silence becomes its own kind of action.
