What you'll find here
Science fiction covers a lot of ground. The books listed here tend to fall into a few families:
- Space opera. Big canvases: fleets, empires, crews who become family. Look for found family and underdog.
- Near future. Our world a few years on, changed by one technology or one decision. Often the most unsettling kind.
- Dystopian and post-apocalyptic. Societies gone wrong, and the people who survive them or push back.
- Cyberpunk and tech thrillers. Corporations, networks, bodies and minds that can be edited. Often morally grey.
- Time travel and time loops. Tagged time loop when a character lives the same day again.
- First contact. Meeting something that isn't us, and what that reveals about us.
Science fiction with a lot of action sits comfortably next to action and adventure; stories with levels and game systems are under LitRPG and progression fantasy.
Finding your next one
- Read chapter 1 first. Science fiction often drops you straight into a world with new words. The free first chapter tells you whether the author makes that easy or hard, and whether you like it either way.
- Filter by trope. Under More filters on the books page you can pick a trope and leave out content you'd rather not read.
- Try "Most finished". Books ranked by how many readers finish the free first chapter. Nobody can pay to be there.
- Read before release. Authors give out free advance copies here. Ask for a place, read in your browser, and tell them what you thought.
